Course Repeats & Grade Forgiveness

Undergraduate students can normally repeat a course twice to improve a grade of C- or lower, and there are overall limits to the number of repeats allowed: 16 units can be repeated for grade forgiveness (the original grade is replaced with the better grade) and 12 units can be repeated for grade averaging (the original grade and all repeats are averaged).

Changes for Spring 2020:

  • Undergraduate students may repeat a course for a letter grade if a grade of CR was earned in Spring 2020
  • Units earned for a repeated course in Spring 2020 will not count toward the 16 unit maximum for grade forgiveness
  • Undergraduate students (including those on Academic Probation) may petition to the College of their major to exceed the 12-unit maximum for grade averaging and/or to repeat a course for a third time or more.
