CSUSM Receives 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award

By Eric Breier

San Marcos, September 142017

California State University San Marcos has received the 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the fourth straight year that CSUSM has been named a HEED Award recipient.

As a recipient of the HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — CSUSM will be featured along with 79 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2017 issue.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected CSUSM based on the institution’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to support a broad definition of diversity on campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ community, as well as all others.

“At Cal State San Marcos we are a diverse group of individuals — diverse in culture, religious belief, political perspective, gender and sexual orientation, nationality, age, career path, talents and abilities,” CSUSM President Karen Haynes said. “As a microcosm of society, it’s important that we continue to model the values of civility and diversity that this campus was founded on. It is our collective responsibility to tend to our campus climate every day, ensuring that our values match the everyday experiences of our students. Receiving this award for a fourth straight year is validation for the hard work we have committed to inclusive excellence.”

The HEED Award process measures an institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through a comprehensive and rigorous application relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees, and best practices for both.

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) received the 2016 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award today from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the third straight year that CSUSM has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — CSUSM will be featured along with 82 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2016 issue.

Notably, faculty have embraced the incorporation of diversity themes into classroom teachings, with over a quarter of the University’s undergraduate curriculum infused with diversity-related content.

It’s our collective responsibility to tend to our campus climate every day, ensuring that our values match the everyday experiences of our students. Receiving this award for a third straight year is validation for the hard work we have committed to diversity and inclusion.”

CSUSM will celebrate the ribbon-cutting for the University’s new Black Student Resource Center this year, the newest member in a family of centers — including The Latino@ Center, The LGBTQ Pride Center, The Cross-Cultural Center, The Gender Equity Center, The Epstein Family Veterans Center and The ACE Scholars Services Center — that foster a campus environment of inclusion and academic success for 15,000 students.

The HEED Award process measures an institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through a comprehensive and rigorous application relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees, and best practices for both.
