It is hard to overstate the way that changes in technology and social media have shaped information distribution and personal communication. While faculty may interact with social media on different levels, it is important to have an understanding of social media for several reasons. The first reason is that today's learners come from a generation of digital natives. As time goes on, incoming students will come from a generations that have always know social media as a form of communication and interaction. In order to engage today's learners it is important to understand how this may affect their understanding of the world, ability to communicate and the ways they access knowledge.
Additionally, social media can be incorporated into teaching techniques in innovative ways that engage students and help achieve learning outcomes.
