Definition:

  • Masculinity is defined as “qualities or attributes associated or regarded as characteristics of Men or Boys”

Why Include Men in the Conversation?:

  • Most of the current conversations around Gender Equity have begun to include men in the conversation, the reason being is the work done around Gender Equity is extremely complex and requires inclusion of all identities. Men can offer a different perspective when it comes to this work, can benefit from the educational programming we host in the space and can serve as allies for Gender Equity

Movember

The month of November is also known as Movember. Movember focuses on the physical and mental health of men.

 

Resources on Masculinity:

  • Teaching Men Project: The Teaching Men Project focuses on the fictional and theoretical works that can have a direct influence on the education around Masculinity, as well as the influence of education.
  • Movember Website: Movember is an organization dedicated to supporting overall Men’s Health. As an organization their 3 main focuses include: awareness and prevention of testicular and prostate cancer, suicide prevention in men and promoting positive mental health of men.
  • Unlearning Toxic Masculinity: Brown University has worked to create a program called Bwell, with the intention of giving men an open and brave space to openly discuss toxic masculinity. Men will work to unlearn different aspects of toxic masculinity and will learn new techniques for coping with stress.
