GEW Student Highlight: Madelyn Miller

By Becky Tracey

Madelyn comes to us on the recommendation of her GEW instructor, Ms. Carrie Morrow. Ms. Morrow shared her thoughts on why Madelyn deserves some recognition, saying, “within our class, Madelyn is a strong student. She is attentive during each class and follows along with every lesson and activity. More importantly, she asks questions when she needs answers! She always has a positive attitude, and I love seeing her smile. Overall, Madelyn is a joy to have in the classroom, and I have confidence in her ability to succeed in college, and beyond!”

Hi Madelyn, tell me a little about yourself and your background.

My name is Madelyn Miller and this is my second year at CSUSM. I'm currently deciding if I want to major in molecular biology or mathematics. I live in Oceanside with my parents, little sister and my cat. I’ve been working as a waitress for the past 5 years at a small breakfast diner. I love spending my free time hanging out with family or watching Pride & Prejudice.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to finish school at CSUSM, obtain a teaching credential and then become a teacher. I also plan on traveling. I’ve already been to Paris and this May I will be going to London with my grandma. Someday I would love to visit Ireland, Italy, and Amsterdam.

What has GEW taught you so far?

GEW has taught me a more in depth research process of writing an essay. I know what type of evidence to use for my essays and know how to analyze the evidence for my argument.  I also learned there are much more pieces of evidence I could use  besides a book, such as interviews. My professor has also made writing fun by not being as strict as my English high school teachers were. My GEW teacher lets me have more freedom when writing my essays.

What kind of advice would you offer to future GEW students?

My advice for other GEW students would be to have confidence in your writing. Its’ important to be passionate about your topic and write about something you really love rather than writing about a topic that is easier. Have confidence in your opinions and arguments. Thank you :)
