Since Dr. Karen Haynes became President of CSUSM in 2004, the university has become one of the five hottest CSU campuses in the state, and student enrollment has exploded by 22 percent to more than 9,000 students. A dynamic leader with progressive ideas, Dr. Haynes has reached out to North County and beyond through creative partnerships with school districts, businesses, and Native tribes, setting the standard in the CSU system. It is no wonder that the university was one of 76 nationwide to receive a Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation. Dr. Haynes holds a doctorate from the University of Texas. She is the author of several books, including A Dream and a Plan: Women’s Paths to Leadership in the Human Services and Affecting Change: Social Workers in the Political Arena. She is the Presidential Sponsor for the Californian Network of Women in Higher Education and serves as Chair of the CSU Commission on the Extended University. Dr. Haynes is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego North Economic Development Corporation, and was honored in 2007 with the San Diego YWCA’s TWIN Award for her positive contributions to the community and the San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” award.
