Positive Psychology in Germany & Austria

Munich Town HallProgram Highlights:

Led by Professor Emily Merryweather, our January in Germany & Austria program will offer students the opportunity to visit beautiful and historic Munich and Vienna and explore the field of Positive Psychology through a cultural and historic lens. This course will emphasize for students a nuance of well-being; finding meaning in difficult times. Therefore, it will be structured around four distinct areas of study; resilience, cultural identity, spirituality and community engagement as they relate to well-being. In order to emphasize the four pillars of the course, students will participate in activities and tours that connect them to the people of Germany and Austria through their unique cultures with cooking lessons, tours of religious sites, art museums, historic castles, coffee houses and public markets. They will also be exposed to historically relevant sites with guided tours at Dachau, a former concentration camp and the Memorial Place White Rose, a museum dedicated to the German resistance. Throughout the course, students will read and discuss the writings Viktor Frankl. In his powerful book, Man’s Search for Meaning he writes of his harrowing and yet life-affirming story of survival at a Nazi concentration camp. The book and travels will act as a platform to facilitate the difficult but necessary conversations about our shared history and our shared humanity.

Planned excursions include:

  • Walking Tours of Munich & Vienna
  • Guided Tour of former concentration camp at Dachau
  • Guided Tastings Tour at Viktualienmarkt, one of Munich's most popular open air marketplaces
