Speech Language Pathology Capstone in Guatemala

Colonial Antigua

Program Highlights:

Led by Professor Darin Woolpert, our January in Guatemala Speech Language Pathology program will offer students the opportunity to visit the charming, colonial city of Antigua as they fulfill their capstone/culminating experience courses.  While in-country, the students will privide in-services to local SLPs, visit different clinical sites, and provide demonstrations and community outreach.

Planned excursions include:

  • Walking Tour of Antigua
  • Tandem Conversation Partner Program
  • Salsa dance classes
  • Market Tour
  • Visit to Lake Atitlan, Pacaya Volcano

Academic Calendar:

January 4-18, 2020

Academic Focus:

SLP 498:  Culminating Experience in Speech-Language Pathology & SLP 698:  Culminating Experience and Summative Assessment in Speech Language Pathology. 

Language of Instruction:

English, though Spanish proficiency is preferred

Requirements: 

  • Prior approval by professor
  • GPA:  2.75 and above; good academic standing prior to departure

Units:

3 units of SLP498/698:  Capstone/Culminating Experience

Housing:

Rooms with a Guatemalan homestay family, approximately 15-20 minutes walk from the Maximo Nivel Institute.  Breakfast and dinner provided seven days a week and students will have key access to their homestays to come and go as needed so long as they respect the rules and routine of the home.

Estimated Cost: 

$1,350 +  Extended Learning Tuition Fees

Program fees include airport pick-up/drop-off, local transportation by private bus in country, homestay accommodation with Guatemalan family, daily breakfast and dinner, limited excursions, and medical insurance.  Airfare and personal expenditures are NOT included in the program cost, and estimated at $1,000.

Ideally, we will get all program participants together for pre-departure orientation in which we will discuss the program, curriculum and make flight suggestions.  It is recommended that you await this meeting before booking any flights.

How to Apply:

  1. Attend an information session/interview process for selection by Faculty Leader, Darin Woolpert.
  2. Fill out the online application materials via the link below.   All application materials must be received to Global Education, Extended Learning Building 588, by Wednesday, October 16, along with your $300 non-refundable deposit.  Online payment preferred through CashNet.  Please be advised to choose E-check and enter your checking account details to avoid the 2.75% convenience fees applicable to all non-checking account payments. Cash, checks, and money orders made payable to CSUSM will also be accepted.
  3. Final payment of program fees is due by noon Friday, November 1 to the Office of Global Education.  CashNet payment is preferred as outlined above Payment of tuition related expenses will be billed by Extended Learning and appear on your Student Center, following the payment guidelines set out by your SLP program.  
  4. A mandatory pre-departure orientation will be held with Professor Woolpert and Global Education staff to discuss arrival instructions and the upcoming course.  Proof of attendance will be recorded.
