The Enhanced Industrial Disability Leave (EIDL) Program is a wage continuation program, in lieu of Workers' Compensation Temporary Disability (TD) benefits for eligible Public Safety employees who have suffered a work related injury or illness (some restrictions, including a three day waiting period, may apply). Currently, only sworn Public Safety (Unit 8) employees are eligible for EIDL benefits. Please note, Public Safety Chiefs and Lieutenants are not eligible for this benefit. Employees deemed eligible for this benefit also must be members of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS).
Whenever any sworn Public Safety (Unit 8) employee is disabled by injury or illness arising out of and in the course of his/her duties, he/she shall be entitled to enhanced industrial disability leave (EIDL) benefits, regardless of his/her period of service with the University.
The EIDL benefit will be equivalent to the injured employee's net take home salary on the date of occurrence of the injury. EIDL eligibility and benefits may continue for no longer than one (1) year after the date of occurrence of the injury. For the purposes of this EIDL section, "net take home salary" is defined as the amount of salary received after federal income tax, state income tax and employee's retirement contribution has been deducted from the employee's gross salary.
The EIDL benefit does not apply to presumptive, stress-related disabilities, any psychiatric disability, or any physical disability arising from a psychiatric injury. If the employee has suffered a work related illness or injury, but is deemed ineligible for EIDL, he or she may be eligible for Industrial Disability Insurance (IDL).
