Spending time at a park or walking along the beach can help us recover from the mental and physical impacts of life's stresses. With many of these benefits either closed or enforcing strict social distancing measures, we can still improve our well-being by engaging with everyday nature close to home.

  • A room with a view: There is plenty of research that suggests a view through a window of vegetation or a body of water can provide a micro-break, supporting cognitive restoration better than a view of concrete. Even if your view does not have either of these, a view of the sky can allow us to see changes in the natural world such as weather or the seasons.
  • Gardening - indoors and out: Whether it be in your backyard or balcony, gardening offers benefits such as reductions in stress, anxiety and depression. As a physical activity, gardening can also improve physical fitness.
  • Green exercise: Exercise that takes place in or around nature has been found to have strong links in improving mood and self-esteem. It is important to follow physical distancing guidelines, but it is also important to exercise rather than be both isolated and sedentary.
