We're always looking for new and better ways technology can help teaching and learning in the classroom. We'd like to tell you about some of the developments in classroom technology you'll be seeing over the next few years.
Beginning in the Fall of 2019, IITS will begin to rollout a new Instructor Station concept design in the new Extended Learning building. This new design offers a minimalist look and feel, while offering new and innovative technologies for use in the classroom. Technologies include the following:
These changes will occur as we replace end-of-life projectors with new ones over the next few years.
In 2016, IITS completed the standardization of Windows 10 in all academic computing spaces throughout campus. All classrooms offer the same desktop experience, access to software, and campus resources for all faculty, students, and staff.
IITS has completed the deployment of the latest release of Microsoft Office, version 2016. The office suite is installed on all campus machines and is also available on CougarApps.
CSUSM offers Zoom, a fully-featured web conferencing package. When combined with the rooms' smart system, and a microphone and webcam, you can do real-time collaboration and conferencing with almost anyone in the world with a computer or portable device. Possible uses include:
These are new things we're trying out and are looking for instructors who want to partner with us in testing these new technologies. Contact us at ids@csusm.edu to discuss what's available.
Digital white-boarding - What if you could write nice and big so everyone in the room can see it, while facing your audience and maybe even walking around the room?
Student device sharing - How about those pesky devices we're always fighting for student attention? What if we could turn them into a help instead of a hindrance?
VHS Tape Players - If you have VHS tapes you'd like to use in class, the Media Library would be happy to digitize them and put the links in Cougar Courses for playback on any device.
VGA Connectivity in Classrooms - As of the 2017-18 academic year, IITS will be upgrading connectivty to classroom projectors to allow for HDMI connectivity and will start to phase out VGA connections. Notices will be published on all instructor stations in the bulletin section of Onscreeen (the projector controls). If your device requires a VGA connection, there will be various adapters available for checkout at the Help Desk in the Kellogg Library.
