The Technology Learning Center - A Popular Study Spot for Students

Fall 2018

The TLC is a new popular space on campus, which is comfortable, and functional. Prior to the Fall 2018 semester, IITS completed a renovation of the Kellogg 2000 Open Lab, now called the Technology Learning Center (TLC). These changes were made as a direct response to student feedback which was collected as part of a survey. In Fall 2017, IITS supported 102 computers in this space and at that time, based on the utilization figures, students were not drawn into the space. As part of the new design, the computer count dropped to 54 in addition to 10 private study lounge chairs. The new space offers a place to bring your own device and study in a private area, or work in the lab seating with new, larger monitors, larger desks, and more functional seating for group work. Each station has personal charging available, along with plenty of screen real-estate using the new 27” and 34” monitors. While the computer count has dropped to better meet changing expectations, the average number of unique logged in users per day is 50% higher in the new renovated space as compared to Fall 2017.

As you walk through the lab mid-week, it is easy to see that students use the 24/5 Kellogg 2000 library zone heavily during the weekdays especially Mondays to Thursdays. The usage has increased almost 74% on those days compared to October of last year. The increase in usage is also readily apparent on the weekends where unique logins have increased three fold. The renovation of the TLC is one example of how IITS strives to provide the best technology and consistent high-quality service that improves the overall experience for the campus community when using technology.  (Posted December 2018)
