TOM Faculty Advisor
Denis Schulz, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM)
Assistant Professor of CEHHS Kinesiology.
Dr. Denis Schulz is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology in the College of Education, Health and Human Services at California State University San Marcos. Drawing on occupational socialization theory and the psychological construct of perceived mattering, his research examines how pre-service and in-service teachers, doctoral students, and faculty members construct identity and sustain well-being across the arc of their careers. Extending this work, another central focus of his research is the development of a pragmatic movement-based model grounded in mattering pedagogy that is designed to help professionals create learning environments where students feel valued and are better positioned to thrive both academically and personally. Together, these lines of inquiry aim to reimagine curriculum design, instruction, and mentorship practices across teacher preparation and higher education contexts. He views TOM as an opportunity to tap into student creativity and build partnerships that draw on the unique specialties of departments within the university while extending outward to serve the needs of the community.
