CSUSM classes that meet LOTER
Guidelines for which class to take next at CSUSM

WHAT A CSUSM LOTER CLASS MUST BE:

  • The 3rd-semester, intermediate course of at least 3 units.
  • In Spanish, French, German, Arabic or Mandarin. (Interested in another language? Take it elsewhere!)
  • Passed with either a a “C” or “Credit”. (A course taken at CSUSM must be taken for a grade to also clear the C3. Courses taken elsewhere for Credit/No Credit do also meet the C3.)
  • Taken as a regular CSUSM class or through CSUSM's Extended Learning.
  • Taken either online or in person.

HELPFUL TIPS

  • You can place directly into the LOTER class (or the one before it), if you already know a language. You do not have to start from scratch.
  • We offer a free Spanish 101 or 102 Bootcamp to review previous studies.
  • Any higher course that lists a below class as a prerequisite meet the LOTER.
  • These do NOT meet LOTER:
-Course name has "conversation", "listening", "writing" or "reading"
-ASL course name has "fingerspelling" or "deaf culture"
    -Language doesn't have fixed grammar
-Online class before Fall 2010 (except Spanish 201 through CSUSM Extended Learning)

IF YOU WANT TO START A NEW LANGUAGE:

Take either 101, 102 and 201 in any of our languages
OR
Take just Spanish 250 "Spanish for Spanish Speakers"

IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL FOREIGN LANGUAGE:

Guidelines on how to pick your course are below.

No high school classes meet the LOTER. (Exception: AP Scores and IB Scores.)

High school classes DO get you into the next college class in the series: 1 year in high school = 1 semester in college.

A college course taken while you were in high school can meet the LOTER only if the course does not appear on your high school transcript.

If it has been more than 2 years since you took high school foreign language, you have four choices:
1) Start at the beginning (101)
2) Take three semesters of a new language
3) Take our Spanish Placement Test to see if you can go directly into 102 or 201,
4) Take our Free Spanish 101 Review to help do well on the Placement Test!
5) Take 102 or 201 at another institution that doesn't have an expiration on prerequisites (for example Palomar). But this is only for very strong students: You'll be in class with students who just finished the class you took years ago!

IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE YOUR COLLEGE FOREIGN LANGUAGE:

Guidelines on how to pick your course are below.

No matter how long ago you took a college class, take the next class in the series.

If you would like to repeat a passed class because it has been a long time, just for your own education, you must do that at another college. The grades and credits will not count.
