Lecture Capture

"Students also value a short video from the instructor, five to seven minutes long, outlining the subject matter of a given week, how it relates to previous and future topics, what the big takeaways should be, etc. They do not want a 50-minute sage-on-a-stage lecture."

Actually, the term "lecture capture" is not really entirely descriptive of what these systems can do for us here at CSUSM. Mediasite allows faculty, staff, and students to record presentations for web delivery. These presentations include video and audio of the presenter as well as recording whatever is happening on the computer screen during the presentation. Recording is really easy to do, and we can help you get started. You can record almost anywhere you would like to: in your office, at home, in the classroom.

Some of the great features of the system:

  • You can teach the way you are used to, without having to modify your existing materials;
  • Almost no post-production or editing required, means your material is ready to go as soon as you hit the stop button;
  • It provides a number of ways for students to interact with the material, including video, audio, high-resolution screen captures, links to supporting materials, and others.
  • This media will work across platforms and browsers for maximum access;
  • We take care of captioning for hearing impaired students for you.

Once created, all media are placed in a content management system - a catalog of media - and we can provide you with links or organized pages of links to place in Cougar Courses. This media is guaranteed to work across modern operating systems and browsers so your audience can access them how they want. So, how do you get started?

Recording in the Classroom

Sometimes you may want to record in the classroom. Most rooms are not equipped with recording systems, but we can deploy them temporarily.

Mediasite-equipped rooms - for the best production values

Our Mediasite recording systems are built into rooms designed for maximum visual and aural impact. With professional lighting, acoustic treatments, multiple cameras, document cameras, microphones, and other pro features, our Mediasite facilities are designed to make you look and sound your best. Sometimes we can even move your entire class into Markstein 104.

Facilities equipped with Mediasite recording systems:

  • Markstein 104 - tiered classroom with Mediasite capability.
  • Kellogg Library 2436 - Mediasite recording studio (Macintosh-based) - self-service, can check out keys from Student Help Desk on 2nd floor.
  • Kellogg Library 2437 - Mediasite recording studio (Windows-based) - self-service, can check out keys from Student Help Desk on 2nd floor.

Use the Mediasite request form to book a session in one of these rooms. One of our staff will be there to help you get started.

Downloading And Preserving Your Mediasite Presentations Long-Term

Storing all of our Mediasite recordings requires a lot of storage space, which can be expensive. For example, as of Fall, 2017, Mediasite recordings totalled over 15 Terabytes. For this reason, we have a policy of deleting old recordings that have not been watched for a long time. To preserve any old recordings, here are some instructions:
