Academic Success Center - Draft Strategic Plan

(Fall 2018- Spring 2023)

Mission

The Academic Success Center (ASC) supports students  in becoming responsible for  their own learning.  The ASC contributes to student academic success by facilitating faculty-staff partnerships that design, implement, and assess innovative, evidence-based academic programming and support.  This programming complements classroom learning and addresses diverse student academic needs.   

VISION

The Academic Success Center creates pathways to educational equity that empower students to achieve their full academic potential at CSUSM and beyond.  We enhance students' academic experience by providing transformative opportunities that foster effective learning. 

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
  • Students expand their confidence and agency when supported by a student-oriented, welcoming, and collaborative environment.
  • Students best develop critical thinking skills, persist in their education, and experience academic success when supported by effective academic programming.
  • Accessible, evidence-based programming and resources, developed by faculty and staff, are crucial to transformative learning.
 

Strategic Objective #1

Create advisory council for Academic Success Center.

Measurable Goal A: Fall 2018 - The OUGS Dean, Senior Co-Director of CLASS (Centers for Learning and Academic Success), and ASC Director develop the charge for this council and establish its composition. The charge and composition are publicly communicated via the website.
Measurable Goal B: Fall 2018 - Determine how to develop the council into a permanent and sustainable advisory group with a long-term election and rotation strategy.  The election and rotation strategy are publicly communicated via website.
Measurable Goal C: Fall 2018 - Establish the ASC Advisory Council.
Measurable Goal D: Spring 2019 - Once the council is established, have it work on the following immediate tasks, and publish all relevant documents:
  1. Develop criteria for programming.
  2. Develop short-term and long-term sustainability criteria.
  3. Align criteria with existing university policies.
  4. Determine how many new projects the ASC can concurrently pilot.
  5. Develop an application process and determine who has eligibility to apply.
  6. Develop assessment timelines and plans for all projects.
  7. Develop processes by which pilot programs are assessed and cancelled or transitioned into  institutionalized programs.
  8. Research contract development regarding intellectual property rights to programming.


Strategic Objective #2

Inform the campus community about the Academic Success Center.

Measurable Goal A: Spring 2019 - Senior Co-Director of CLASS and ASC Director develop an ASC communication plan that complements the OUGS plan.
  1.  Identify audiences and develop roll-out plan for information-sharing.
  2.  Identify methods of communication, especially technology-based.
  3. Develop tailored messages for particular audiences.
  4. Develop assessment tools for evaluating success of communication plan.
  5. Create a cycle for communication.
  6. Develop communication tools: .e.g., brochures, e-mails, social media sites, talking points.
  7. Train staff to deliver information in accordance with the communication roll-out plan.
Measurable Goal B: Fall 2019 - Roll out communication plan.

 

Strategic Objective # 3

Recruit faculty and staff partners to support ASC academic programming.

Measurable Goal A: Fall 2018 - Develop a recruitment plan that supports ASC goals.
Measurable Goal B: Fall 2018 - Launch ASC staff hiring plan.
Measurable Goal C: Fall 2019 -Design focus groups with students to best determine how to recruit students for relevant programs. 
Measurable Goal D: Fall 2019 - Develop recruitment plan for attracting students to engage in relevant programming.
Measurable Goal E: Spring 2020 - Strategize with Faculty Center to showcase previous, faculty-created programs, to highlight development of pilot projects.
Measurable Goal F: Spring 2020 - Recruit students for relevant programming.
Measurable Goal G: Fall 2020 - Pilot the development and delivery of1-2 new programs per year as appropriate.
Measurable Goal H: Spring 2021 - Communicate successes to campus community.
 

Strategic Objective #4

Facilitate growth of Academic Success Center programs and access to ASC space needs.

Measurable Goal A: Fall 2018 - ASC Director and Advisory Council develop priority criteria for ASC space and programming. 
Measurable Goal B: Spring 2019 - ASC Director and Advisory Council develop guidelines for short-term and long-term usage of the ASC space. Guidelines are publicly communicated via website.
Measurable Goal C: Fall 2018 - Facilitate growth of the staff-led and faculty liaison projects.
  1. Use the baseline markers established in Spring 2020 to determine growth of the program.
  2. Evaluate achievement of goals for growth of each program.
  3. Make changes and reset goals.
  4. As programs grow, determine new staffing needs.
 Measurable Goal D: Fall 2018 - Facilitate growth of Supplemental Insturction.
  1. Use the baseline markers established in Spring 2020 to determine growth of the program.
  2. Evaluate achievement of goals for growth of the program.
  3. Make changes and reset goals.
  4. As programs grow, determine new staffing needs.
  Measurable Goal E: Spring 2019 - Facilitate piloting of pop-up tutoring.
  Measurable Goal F: Fall 2019 - Facilitate growth of Faculty Mentoring.
  1. Use the baseline markers established in Spring 2020 to determine growth of the program.
  2. Evaluate achievement of goals for growth of the program.
  3. Make changes and reset goals.
  4. As programs grow, determine new staffing needs.
Measurable Goal G: Spring 2019 - Develop and utilize ongoing assessment practices for efficient and effective space utilization.
Measurable Goal H: Spring 2020 - Determine a set of baseline data markers for each program. Document and archive goals.
Measurable Goal I: Fall 2020 - Asses data collecting practices and adjust as needed.
Measurable Goal J: Fall 2022-2023 - Develop and assess new programs launched between 2020 and 2022.
