Steps to Change Final Exam (NOT for Students) ONLY faculty may submit a Final Exam Change Request:

    1. Request Dean's Office Approval of the change, except in situations (1) or (2) listed here:
DO Approval is NOT needed when (1) using an available Exam Make-Up Day/Times for a Fall class (shown in "Exam Make-Up..." dropdown) or (2) if it is a change to NO In-Class Final Exam (e.g. Paper due).
    2. Collaborate with students to identify a change that is free from schedule conflicts, using the designated final exam start times from the Fall or Spring Final Exam Policies. Instructor will need to handle any final exam conflicts with individual students, if needed.
    3. Request department staff find an available room in 25Live.
    4. Submit the Finals Change by Faculty Request Form
    5. Confirm with students only after receiving a reply from Academic Scheduling that the change has been made.
  • Online Asynchronous Classes

Classes that do not have set meeting days and times on the class schedule, including asynchronous classes, do not have an assigned final exam day/time.

For a completely asynchronous class, a final time can be listed as a "deadline" during finals week (a time of 11:58-11:59 PM will be listed) using the Finals Change by Faculty Request Form. No approval from the Dean's Office is required.

  • Removing Final Exam if Class does not need it (e.g. paper due)

Classes that do not need the set final exam room, can submit the Finals Change by Faculty Request Form. On the form, please select "Change to NO In-Class Final Exam (e.g. Paper due)." This type of change does NOT need Dean's Office approval.

  • Final Exam Make-Up Days & Times

In Fall, the following Finals Days & Times during Finals Week are available and do NOT require Dean's Office Approval in order to submit a Finals Change by Faculty Request Form. During these times, there are no classes scheduled to take Final Exams in the Designated Final Exam Schedule.

In Spring there are no Exam Make-Up Times available when other Finals are not already scheduled, due to a shorter Finals Week and commencement ceremonies. • Classes may NOT meet finals week during their regularly scheduled class meeting time
To understand why classes may NOT meet finals week during their regularly scheduled class meeting time please see the "Understanding the Designated Final Exam Schedule" dropdown option.
  • Understanding the Designated Final Exam Schedule
    • Each class meeting 2 or more hours/week has a finals date and time associated with it and is listed in the Student and the Faculty Centers in MyCSUSM.
    • Final exam times are different from the regular class days/times meeting times during the semester. Classes may NOT meet finals week during their regularly scheduled class meeting time.
    • See the Policies for Spring and Fall, linked above, for the times listed each day of that semester's final exam week.
    • Assigned final exam days/times ensure that every class, meeting for 2 or more hours per week, has a 2 hour-long final, which is often important for classes that would regularly only meet 1-1.5 hours on a given day during the regular semester.
    • If a class is comprised of multiple components (e.g., lecture and lab) and has a final listed as "yes" in the Catalog, the final is scheduled based on the meeting time(s) of one class portion only.
    • Only classes that meet 2 or more hours in-person have a final scheduled on campus. Classes that do not regularly meet on campus should NOT be meeting on campus during finals week.
    • Classes that do not have set meeting days and times on the class schedule, including asynchronous classes, do not have an assigned final exam day/time.
    • A set final exam schedule better ensures students and faculty do not have conflicting final exams.
