Payment appears to be for travel. Is the student also a university employee being reimbursed for travel as an employee?

 

 
 
 

 

Travel as an Employee


If a student-employee is being reimbursed for travel and the primary beneficiary of the travel is CSUSM, then the individual traveled as an employee. Evidence that travel primarily benefits CSUSM would include:

  • The department routinely or regularly has staff travel under similar circumstances (a department regularly sends staff to a certain conference and has previously sent a student-employee to the conference)
  • The travel supports a core function of the employing department, or directly relates to a core function of the student-employee’s job
  • Other staff in the employing department will benefit from the individual's travel (from knowledge or resources the individual is expected to share with staff upon their return)
