Education

Accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), the School of Education prepares next generation educators through cutting-edge credential and graduate programs. Our programs provide opportunities for students to critically engage with issues of social justice, diversity, and digital literacies.


Career Pathways: Educators, K-12 Teachers, and Educational Leadership


Human Development

Human Development is one of the largest programs on campus with over 1,000 students. Our graduates seek careers in diverse settings, from non-profit and state agencies to counseling, health-care and educational programs as counselors, social workers, teachers, health-care workers and related positions.

  • Bachelor of Arts Program

    The Human Development Program engages students in a challenging academic curriculum which combines traditional classroom learning with experiential problem-based and field experience opportunities in human development-related professions in diverse settings.

    In addition to completing required core coursework, each student completes two courses chosen from one of three concentrations: Counseling Services, Health Services, or an Individualized plan

    Experiential learning is gained from field experience where students participate in community service learning activities related to their career and intellectual interests in human development. Students also conduct an applied research study on a subject.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology refers to "the study of human movement." The bachelor's program prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the areas of rehabilitation, wellness, fitness, public health, and education.  The master's program provides education and training for careers requiring an advanced degree, as well as preparation for doctoral study.


Career Pathways: Rehabilitation, Wellness, Fitness, Public Health, Education, Health or Physical Educator, and Personal Trainer/Coach.


Nursing

We strive to be a dynamic leader in the art and science of nursing, educating ethically and culturally-sensitive nursing students to alleviate suffering and to promote, preserve, and restore dignity for all patients. The School of Nursing creates and practices innovative models of instruction, generates cutting edge research and creative activities, and advocates for health care needs in diverse local, regional, and global communities.


Career Pathways: Licensed Vocational Nurse, Registered Nurse, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner


Public Health

The Master of Public Health program is proud to offer a curriculum that addresses health disparities, embraces diversity, reinforces the practice of cultural competence and calls upon our students to gain community-engaged public health experience, through research, service learning and internships.

    Master of Public Health (MPH)

    The Master of Public Health prepares students as practitioners of public health and as leaders in public and private sector agencies and organizations. Graduates are well-prepared to succeed in positions as public health professionals in local community organizations, hospitals, health management organizations, government agencies, the military, academia, and the private sector.

    Public Health Minor

    The Public Health Minor prepares students to gain interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in public health that are complementary to their primary field. The curriculum focuses on the history and philosophy of public health, organizational structures of the U.S. health system, introduction to epidemiology, and other topics in Kinesiology and Human Development. This interdisciplinary approach provides students the opportunity to enhance their degree with a public health focus that is centered on protecting and improving the health of people and their communities.

Social Work

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program is designed to develop culturally informed, ethical, and effective professionals for direct social work practice with diverse populations. The MSW program prepares students for direct practice in a variety of settings including public, private, and nonprofit agencies and organizations, in social services, child welfare services, human services, healthcare, and mental/behavioral health.

Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology is grounded in providing an innovative curriculum which promotes reflections of one's own diversity, actions, and empathy to create a climate of shared values and respect with the culturally and linguistically diverse populations that we serve.

    Bachelor's of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

    This degree provides education in basic human communication and its disorders and introduces students to evidence-based practices, ethics, and professional attitudes in serving diverse individuals in our community who have communication disorders.

    Master's of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
