Jim Hamerly CoBA Student Success Endowed Scholarship Announced

Dean Hamerly and students

Cal State San Marcos College of Business Administration recently announced the Jim Hamerly CoBA Student Success Endowed Scholarship! In honor of the retirement of Dean Jim Hamerly, Ph.D., a group of CoBA Dean’s Advisory Board members, Executives in Residence, alumni, faculty and staff, CSUSM Foundation Board directors and friends of the university generously contributed $41,350 to establish the new endowed scholarship fund.

“Jim has had an extraordinary impact across the college, and the community, during his time as the dean of the College of Business Administration at CSUSM,” said Emilie Hersh, CSUSM Foundation Board director and CoBA Executive in Residence. “Thinking differently, creatively, and extensively about the ways in which to build the best opportunities for students, and to engage the community in supporting CoBA, has created a foundation that I hope we all continue to build upon in the future.”

The Jim Hamerly CoBA Student Success Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in a College of Business Administration degree. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

“I can’t think of any better way to more perfectly honor Jim’s legacy than by continuing to create opportunities to support students in exploring their education and professional opportunities through an endowed scholarship that bears both his name and ‘Student Success’ in its title,” Hersh said.

The initial goal was to raise $30,000 to establish the endowed scholarship fund in perpetuity at the CSUSM Foundation and provide a $1,000 scholarship award to one student per year to start. Thanks to the inspiring support of the founding donors, the initial goal was exceeded in less than three weeks.

“Thank you for the student scholarship in my honor. I am both greatly surprised and humbled by the efforts and generosity of my colleagues and alumni. The personal friendship that they have offered, their impact upon our students, and our shared vision for the students and college are things I will forever treasure,” Hamerly said.

CoBA will continue to raise funds in support of Jim’s tribute scholarship to increase the number of students who receive scholarship awards each year and maximize the impact of Jim’s legacy which has touched many lives and continues to inspire the CSUSM community.
