Mobile Making After School Program

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Mobile Making Program aims to develop a research-based model for supporting and evaluating a making-centered afterschool STEM program for different social, cultural, and socioeconomic settings. At its core, making is a participant-driven, design-based educational endeavor grounded in experiential learning. This project brings STEM-based making to local middle schools by taking equipment, supplies and undergraduate students who major in a STEM field at CSUSM ("STEM Ambassadors") to after school program sites.

Building on a decade of work, CRESE has established 20 after school STEM making clubs throughout North County San Diego. We are in 4 elementary schools in Oceanside, 11 middle schools in San Marcos, Escondido and Vista, 3 libraries in Escondido, Poway and Oceanside, and 2 Boys & Girls Clubs in San Marcos and Vista. Teams of STEM Ambassadors and School of Education field service students visit sites each week to engage students in design-based, DIY activities. CRESE aims to introduce a variety of STEM concepts such as hydraulics, circuitry, anatomy, optics, and coding.
