Great California ShakeOut 2020

This has been an unprecedented year, full of uncertainty and change. In the past, we’ve participated in the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill while on campus. This year offers new opportunities with most students, faculty and staff working or learning virtually, and it offers a chance to participate in this year’s drill from home. So, remember to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” for this year’s Great California ShakeOut drill.

Major earthquakes can happen at any time. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves and assess our homes and workspaces for potential earthquake hazards. The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophe for you, your family, the university, and our community.

On October 15th at 10:15 a.m. a message will be broadcast through the campus Emergency Notification System advising you to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. We will announce the start of the drill using Text, Email, Desktop Alert and Digital Signage. When you receive the notification please participate and “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” wherever you are.

No announcement will go out to end the drill, as soon as you’ve completed the “Drop, Cover, and Hold” please resume normal operations.

Anywhere you are, “Drop, Cover and Hold On” under any available large object that will protect you from falling debris. This is also a perfect time to look around your homes, workspace and classrooms to identify potential hazards if this were an actual earthquake.

Below is a link to a short 60 second ShakeOut message. Please take a few minutes sometime on October 15th to watch and share with family and friends.
