Responding to Bias at CSUSM

By reporting bias incidents, you are helping to maintain CSUSM as an inclusive and safe campus environment. 

What is a Bias Incident?

Bias incidents refer to conduct, speech, images or expression that demonstrate conscious or unconscious bias which targets individuals or groups based on any Protected Status: i.e., Age, Disability, Gender (or sex), Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Genetic Information, Marital Status, Medical Condition, Nationality, Race or Ethnicity, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Sex Stereotype, and Veteran or Military Status.

The Bias reporting system does not replace existing policies or normal avenues of reporting at CSUSM.

Not for Emergencies

To report an emergency, DO NOT use this form. Call the University Police Department at 760-750-4567 or 911.

Bias Reporting Process

The Bias Assessment Team will review the report and contact you to set up a time to meet with one of the members. During the meeting, team members will review the information you provided and work with you and facilitate access to campus and community resources and support.

  • Anyone may report anonymously, but the university may be limited in its ability to respond.
  • The bias incident form is for all members of the campus community including faculty, staff, students and administrators.

We encourages all members of the community to promote educational opportunities that appropriately address acts of intolerance that separate us as people. 

Additional Reporting Options

If you are reporting an incident of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, sexual misconduct, dating and/or domestic violence, or stalking, please report using one of these two options:

Consistent with CSU Executive Orders 1096, 1097 and 1098, if you have experienced an incident of discrimination, harassment, retaliation or sexual misconduct (including dating and domestic violence, or stalking), please contact the Office for Title IX / Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation at 760-750-6020. The office is located in Administrative Building 3200.

Hate Crimes

Hate crimes should be formally reported to the University Police by calling 760-750-4567.

*CSUSM values freedom of thought and expression, respect for multiple perspectives and civil and open expression as well as a variety of views. It is important to note that bias incidents or hate crimes do not include speech or behavior that an individual or the institution merely disagrees with or finds offensive.
