History Club

The History Club is open to all students at CSUSM who have a love of history! Students don’t have to be History majors or even take History classes to join the clubs activities, socials, and excursions. For more information, email us, join our Facebook group, and follow us on Instagram.

Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta is a national history honors society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by its members in a variety of ways. Phi Alpha Theta was established in 1921 and now has over 800 chapters at universities throughout the United States.

CSUSM’s Alpha Zeta Chi chapter has a proud tradition of sponsoring informative and fun historically oriented activities, including guest speakers, a film series, field trips, and the 2003 Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference (which was attended by over 100 participants from universities throughout southern California, including 49 students who presented papers). We hope to continue the tradition both this year and well into the future.

To be eligible for membership, undergraduate students must have completed at least 12 units of history courses with a GPA of 3.1 or better and an overall CSUSM GPA of 3.0 or better. Graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their master’s degree in History, have a GPA of better than 3.5, and shall have completed approximately 30% of the residence requirements for the master’s degree. The dues for a lifetime membership in Phi Alpha Theta plus one year of Alpha Zeta Chi chapter dues are $50.00. If you qualify and would like to apply for membership in Phi Alpha Theta, please fill out and return the form along with an unofficial transcript to faculty advisor Dr. Ibrahim Al-Marashi. You can pay your membership dues directly on the Phi Alpha Theta website after you are officially accepted to the chapter.
