Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Program Information

As a CSU employee, you may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) - a federal program created for those in U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or not-for profit organizations. The California State University is a qualified employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, and many full-time CSU employees may be eligible to certify employment and receive credit toward forgiveness.

The PSLF program may forgive the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

The Department of Education manages the PSLF program and more information on eligibility can be found on the Federal Student Aid website.

Employment Certification

The PSLF Certification and Application form must be signed by a designated official who has access to your full employment records. Employees must submit the PSLF form with sections 1 and 2 completed to payroll@csusm.edu. Please do not include your social security number when sending forms via email. You may add your social security number once Payroll returns the form.

Payroll will complete sections 3 and 4, then email the form back. It is the responsibility of the PSLF applicant to submit the application, and all required paperwork, to the U.S. Department of Education in order to qualify for the PSLF Program. The U.S. Department of Education, not the CSU, reviews the applications and makes the determination of eligibility for the PSLF Program.

Temporary Expanded PSLF Update:

The Department of Education announced a set of actions that temporarily expanded the types of repayments that can be counted toward loan forgiveness to help more people take advantage of the PSLF program, including a time-limited waiver so that student borrowers can count payments from all federal loan programs or repayment plans towards forgiveness.  This waiver ended October 31, 2022 and is no longer available.
