Advanced Practice Nursing Concentration

The School of Nursing offers two tracks with several specializations within the Advanced Practice Nursing Concentration.

Nurse Practitioner Track

The Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Nurse working with populations across the lifespan.  Based on knowledge gained as a licensed Registered Nurse, the Nurse Practitioner uses an advanced level of study to go beyond the scope of practice of the RN role with a highly developed skill set with complex acute and chronic illnesses. Integrating both nursing and medical models the Nurse Practitioner offers access to health care in a wide variety of settings including in-patient and ambulatory sites.

Family Nurse Practitioner Specialization

The Family Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who delivers health care to individuals of all ages and their families throughout the lifespan. Family Nurse Practitioners serve as primary health care providers in a variety of settings. The Family Nurse Practitioner operates in independent and collaborative practices in caring for patients and their families in the community. This includes skills in health assessment, diagnosis, health promotion, disease prevention, and management of common acute and chronic illnesses. Upon completion of course work, students may submit an application for eligibility to sit for the ANCC FNP certification exam or AANP certification exam. After passing the ANCC or AANP certification exam, students will then be eligible to apply for California NP certification.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Specialization

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is an advance practice registered nurse who focuses clinical practice on individuals, families, or populations across the life span at risk for developing and/or having a diagnosis of psychiatric disorders or mental health problems. The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a specialist who provides primary mental health care to patients seeking mental health services in a wide range of settings. This includes the assessment diagnosis and management of mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. Upon completion of the program, students may submit an application for eligibility to sit for the ANCC PMHNP (across the lifespan) certification exam. After passing the ANCC certification exam, students will then be eligible to apply for California NP certification.
