A huge THANK YOU to Dr. Kimberly D’Anna-Hernandez for her many contributions to OTRES, including serving as Associate Director for the past year. Dr. D’Anna-Hernandez has recently been recruited to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she can be closer to family and continue to pursue excellence in teaching and research. We are very sorry to lose her but are happy that she will continue to have an important role in OTRES through December 2020, when she leaves for Marquette.

In honor of dedicated years of service to OTRES, we are honoring Dr. Charles De Leone and Dr. Julie Jameson as the inaugural OTRES Faculty Fellows. Dr. De Leone, Professor of Physics at CSUSM, has been a core mentor for OTRES Scholars and co-instructor for the OTRES professional development course, providing advice and support that has allowed many of our scholars to pursue graduate studies at top tier universities around the nation. Dr. Julie Jameson has been the writing instructor for OTRES, helping scholars develop fellowship proposals, resulting in several NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, Ford Foundation Fellowships, and honorable mentions for these programs. Dr. De Leone and Dr. Jameson have also helped select OTRES Scholars and have provided guidance and advice to the leadership of OTRES. We are very grateful for their hard work in support of students and of OTRES.

After many years working to build research opportunities for students and faculty at CSUSM, Dr. Victor Rocha has decided to transition into retirement.  We are very grateful for his longtime leadership – he founded the Office for Biomedical Research and Training (OBRT) at CSUSM in August of 2000 and served as its Director until December of 2009 – OBRT transitioned to OTRES in 2010 to acknowledge the broad focus of the office on training, research and education. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Rocha successfully obtained millions of dollars in grant funding that launched the CSUSM MBRS-SCORE Program, the CSUSM MBRS-RISE Program, the CSUSM MARC-U*STAR Program, the North County Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program and other initiatives, and helped establish OBRT as a force on campus. He has served as Associate Director since 2010. Dr. Rocha He will remain active in OTRES as a Senior Consultant. We would like to give our utmost thanks to Dr. Rocha for his many years of service to OBRT and OTRES, and we look forward to his advice, counsel and support for many years to come.

As always, OTRES is dedicated to supporting the entire campus community and we remain interested in working with anyone who can contribute to our mission and values. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have an idea about a collaboration or to discuss how you might contribute to OTRES.
