CSUSM is proud to be 100 percent smoke, tobacco, and vapor free since September 2017. California State University Chancellor Executive Order (1108) mandated this policy to provide the California State University’s faculty, staff, students, guests and the public with campuses that support the principle of one’s individual freedom to learn, teach, work, think and take part in their intellectual endeavors in a fulfilling, rewarding, safe and healthy environment.

Hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide – including the entire UC and CSU system - prohibit tobacco use to address the risks to users and non-users alike. The Surgeon General has stated that tobacco use in any form presents a significant health hazard, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the California Environmental Protection Agency have determined that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke.
