Graduation

At Cal State San Marcos we are dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for all of our students. As we welcome our undocumented students to campus we understand that it may be difficult for some parents and families. We want to assure you that every effort is made to create a diverse and inclusive campus climate where students can easily connect with staff, faculty and their peers. All of our students are protected under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of all information contained in a student's educational records. These records and related information will not be released to anybody other than the student without written consent and authorization from the student.

It is important for all parents and families to keep up to date with their student and encourage them to become familiar with the resources that are offered on campus and within the community. It is our hope that, through this website, parents and families will further educate themselves on current laws, resources and relevant school information.

Mixed Status Families

We understand some of our students may come from mixed status families which may have one or more members who are undocumented. We encourage you to make a plan in the event that your family may become separated due to custody, emergencies or other unforeseen situations. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center provides a variety of resources, including a Family Preparedness Plan that can be accessed online.

Family members and students should take the following steps in the event that a parent or family member should be deported:

  • Know bank account information and PIN numbers for access to funds
  • Have multiple family members listed on younger siblings school emergency contacts
  • Have a list of emergency contacts that are easily accessible (family members, school, etc.)

We hope that you and your student have a rewarding and positive experience at CSUSM!
