Learn About the Issues

STARS peer educators utilize interactive theater and dialogue to transform individual behaviors and create positive social change. STARS educates students on sexual assault, relationship abuse, consent, and bystander intervention.

Is this really an issue for CSUSM students?

Yes! What we know on a national level is that approximately 1 in 4 women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her life, and 1 in 6 women will be the victim of sexual assault at some point in her life. College women are at higher risk than any other demographic.

  • College age women are 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted.
  • Nearly 5 percent (4.9 percent) of college women are victimized in any given calendar year
  • For every 1,000 women attending an institution of higher education, there will be 35 incidents of rape in a given academic year. For CSUSM, this means the number of rapes every year could exceed 300.
  • Women of all ages are at risk for domestic and sexual violence, and those age 20 to 24 are at the greatest risk of experiencing nonfatal intimate partner violence.
