  • What exactly is Success Coaching?
     

    Success Coaches work one-on-one with first-year students to teach them skills that help students maximize their college experience both inside and outside the classroom. The primary goal is to connect with, engage, and empower students to become a successful undergraduate. The Success Coach meets regularly with each student that is assigned to them on a bi-weekly basis, where students are encouraged to establish goals, develop objectives and to reach goals with specific academic goals. Success Coaches will also work to connect students to other campus support services and student engagement on campus.

  • How was I selected for this program?

    All first-year students have been given the opportunity to participate in the success coaching process. CSU San Marcos is committed to student success and student achievement services.

  • How long are individual sessions?
    Individual sessions generally range from 20-30 minutes. However, success coaches will remain engaged with you until you have reached a positive solution and/or feel supported.
  • How often will I meet with my coach?
    Students are required to meet with their coach regularly. Success Coaches work with students on determining how often that is based on the need of the student. Generally speaking, you can expect to meet with your Success Coach at least bi-weekly.
  • Is this program mandatory?

    While the program is not mandatory, Success Coaches seek to assist students in all aspects of college success. It is a valuable resource and the success coaches work to ensure that you learn how to become a successful college student.

  • I told my roommate about this program, and now he/she wants a success coach. How can my roommate be a part of CSU Success Coaching services?

    At this time, coaching is limited to all first-year students. However, students requesting additional support are encouraged to contact the Office of Success Coaching for referrals to other student support services on campus.

  • How did I get matched to my Success Coach?

    A comprehensive assessment of data elements assisted us in assigning all first-year students to success coaches.

  • What will my coach and I talk about?

    Typical success coaching meetings are individualized and based on student needs and personal goals. The initial meeting with can last up to 30 minutes as you and your success coaching begin to get to know each other.

  • Will my parents be informed of what I discuss during my coaching sessions?

    No. Due to FERPA regulations, success coaches are not permitted to share information discussed in coaching sessions with parents. If you want your parents to be involved, you will need to let us know directly. We will need to get permission to speak with your parents in writing from you.

  • Who are the coaches?

    You can visit our website to meet the team and view individual coach profiles.

  • How do I schedule an appointment with my coach?
    You can call email your success coach directly or schedule a meeting through MS Teams Booking on our appointments page.
  • What happens if I don't make my success coaching appointment or need to reschedule?

    The Office of Success Coaching requires at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. This helps to ensure other students are able to meet with their success coach in a timely manner. If you need to reschedule, visit our appointments page.
