Contest Guidelines

Purpose:

CSUSM is in search of a new fight song to capture the Cougar Spirit.

Prize:

$1000 worth of gift cards, prizes and CSUSM swag. But most importantly, the chance to be a part of CSUSM history.

Submission Rules:

  1. Submissions should be made using this form.
  2. For full consideration, entries must be submitted by March 30. However, submissions will be accepted until the song is chosen.
  3. Create lyrics, set to the music provided:

    Tune B
  4. Any submission that includes profanity or inappropriate language and/or subject matter will be disqualified.
  5. Submissions should be timeless (should not include current slang or pop-culture references).
  6. Submissions should be written to be inclusive of all CSUSM students (not a particular individual, team, or organization).
  7. Questions can be directed to the Fight Song Committee by emailing jschreiber@csusm.edu.

The final Fight Song will be unveiled on Sept 1 at the official opening of the Sports Center.

Suggestions for Entries:

Good submissions for the fight song might include...

  1. A first verse that can stand alone/act as a chorus
  2. References to our school name, mascot, athletic program, campus colors
  3. Words of encouragement, positivity and motivation
  4. School spirit and wishing our athletics teams well
  5. No reference to a specific sport

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can submit song lyrics to the competition?

Any person can submit lyrics for consideration. Students, staff, faculty, alumni or community members. However, the voting on the final entries will be restricted to current students and alumni.

2. When will the voting take place?

Voting should take place from May 2 through May 9, 2016. (These dates are tentative and will be updated when they are confirmed!)

Voting will begin on April 15, 2016 and continue through April 22, 2016.

3. When will the winner be confirmed? 

After voting ends, the writer of the winning entry will have the chance to work with our music consultant to ensure the song and lyrics are the right fit and make any adjustments as necessary. The song will be unveiled at the Sports Center grand opening on September 1.

4. How long should my submission be?

Good fight songs usually include 2-4 verses and a refrain(chorus). Submissions should include at least two, but no more than five verses and one refrain.

5. Can I write my own music for the fight song?

While we have suggested a tune as a framework for the fight song, contest submissions may include original music.
