Welcome to CSUSM Women's Studies

San Diego County has been a pioneer in Women’s Studies since 1970 when the nation’s first program launched at SDSU. Today, CSUSM Women’s Studies students continue to explore the same profound themes in a feminist, interdisciplinary, and academically rigorous program.

  • How are women’s lives shaped by politics, economics, art, culture, and education?
  • What expectations are placed on women and men in society, and how are such expectations challenged in productive ways?
  • How do concepts of family, parenting, and work impact individuals?
  • What can we learn from studying inequality—sexism, racism, classism, ageism, and homophobia—and how can that learning be applied?

WMST Curriculum and Career Preparation

Our Women’s Studies Department offers courses that examine gender in relation to race, class, sexuality, and other identities, in national and international contexts. Our students gain a solid academic foundation on which they then develop the professional skills necessary for rewarding employment in the 21st century. Analytical thinking, writing, teamwork, and research skills prepare Women’s Studies students for careers in diverse areas: counseling and human resources, law, social services, public safety, journalism, international relations, and education, among others
