The following information explains my philosophy and contributions in the areas of teaching, and research, and scholarly activities, and illustrates how I have reached my goals.
The main factor that inspired me to be a teacher was my family. Both of my parents and most of my ancestors were teachers and I wanted to be an educator like them. In fall 2002 I joined CSUSM because of two main reasons: “Diversity” and “Student-instructor collaboration”. I enjoy teaching students from many different backgrounds. Further, most of our classes have small sizes which allow me to talk to my students face to face and give them the attention they need to succeed in my courses.
I am strongly committed to teaching and I believe that educating others is a responsibility that should be taken seriously and with care. I believe that all students can be successful; they simply need to tap their potential. Thus, I expect excellence from every student that steps into my classroom and in return, I strive to provide quality teaching through my lectures, labs, and exercises. Thus, I continue to grow and learn so that I stay up to date on the relevant information. I believe that students become more engaged and learn more through active learning as opposed to passive listening. Therefore, I strive to incorporate hands-on demonstrations and activities throughout my courses.
I base my research on several core principles. First, an important issue for me is the relevance of my research. It is critical that the research in which I engage in be not only interesting to me, but also be of use to other academies, businesses, and communities. Second, I feel responsible to attempt to conduct the highest quality research possible. If research is to be relevant, it must also be based on quality data, thorough analysis, and properly reasoned interpretation. Therefore, I try to maintain high-quality standards in the research in which I participate. Third, my knowledge about what is true may change. Therefore, to conduct high-quality research I am open to different perspectives, methodologies, and ways of thinking to advance my understanding of the nature of what I study. Finally, it is important to include undergraduate and graduate students in my research. Since I joined CSUSM, I have been involved in research related to Transaction management in object-Oriented Database, Bioinformatics, and currently I am collaborating with other faculty doing topics related to Data Science, Data Mining, deep learning, and Machine Learing.
