About Kristin A. Bates, Ph.D

Kristin A. Bates is Professor of Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies. She earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington where she concentrated in criminology and social control. She has been teaching at CSUSM since 1998. Her research is in the area of inequality and social justice, with a specific focus on race and social control. She is the coeditor, with Richelle Swan, of Through the Eye of Katrina: Social Justice in the United States (2nd ed., 2010), coauthor, with Richelle Swan, of Juvenile Delinquency in a Diverse Society (3rd ed., 2021), and coauthor, with Michelle Inderbitzin and Randy Gainey, of Deviance and Social Control: A Sociological Perspective (3rd ed., 2021) and Perspectives in Deviance and Social Control (2nd ed., 2019).

Research

My research falls into the general areas of criminology and justice studies.  I have engaged in research on family and delinquency; racial bias in the juvenile justice system; racial bias in bail decision making; race/gender and the war on drugs; Hurricane Katrina; and, the impact of suppression techniques such as civil gang injunctions on community, individual bonds, and racialized and gendered social control.
