Microsoft Copilot

CSUSM staff, faculty, and students have access to the Enterprise version of Microsoft Copilot.

Copilot is a generative AI tool that utilizes the same technology as ChatGPT Plus*

*Copilot Creative utilizes GPT-4 Turbo, the latest version of GPT.

Copilot can help you:

  • generate web search results
  • generate creative content such as narratives, poems, etc.
  • generate business and education content such as reports, emails, assignment prompts, etc.
  • generate images
  • summarize or analyze text
  • analyze images

Getting started with Microsoft Copilot

  1. Open copilot.microsoft.com or select the Copilot icon on the sidebar in your Microsoft Edge browser. You can also download the Copilot app
  2. Type your prompt into the chat window
  3. In the response, review the sources linked at the bottom by “Learn more.” You can fact-check the information provided or dive deeper into a topic by accessing the original articles, studies, or reports.
  4. Copilot has three conversation styles to choose from when starting a chat. Each style adjusts the behavior and style of Copilot's responses:

    • Creative: Use this mode for more original and imaginative responses. It is the most comprehensive conversation style, powered by GPT-4. This setting is optimized for in-depth conversations with charts and detailed analyses and is more integrated within responses. Creative provides responses most similar with what ChatGPT Plus produces.
    • Balanced: Use this mode for more informative and friendly responses. It is a standard chat experience. It still offers in-depth conversations but without the charts, analyses, and imagery.
    • Precise: Use this mode for more concise and straightforward responses. It is a basic chat experience, a bit more sophisticated than a search engine. It is recommended for quick response times and straightforward answers that are grounded in web data.

Keeping Your Content Private

When you use your CSUSM credentials to sign in to Microsoft Copilot (you will see a green "Protected" bubble on the top right), you ensure that any content you provide remains private and is not used by Microsoft or any other vendor. This is unlike free generative AI tools (including ChatGPT) that will use whatever content you provide for training their tools.

Copilot for Education

Microsoft Copilot can be used by educators for brainstorming classroom activities, lesson planning, rewriting content, and more.
