Add Videos to CC via Stream/OneDrive

You can add your videos stored in Microsoft Stream/OneDrive directly to your course from within Cougar Courses. You can either do so as a link in a Module or embedded on a Page. Embedding on a Page is useful when you want to provide other content (text, images, videos) alongside the video for context. With either method, students can watch your video from within Cougar Courses.

Link to Video in Modules

  1. From Modules, go to the module where you would like to add the video and click the plus icon to the right of the module name.
  2. Choose External Tool from the dropdown menu at the top of the pop-up window.
  3. Choose Microsoft OneDrive. Allow the pop-up window to load with the contents of your OneDrive (this may take a second).
  4. The next step depends on if you have already uploaded the video to OneDrive or not.
    1. If you have not yet uploaded the video: select the Folder you want to add the video to. Click the Upload option in the upper right of the pop-up window (if you do not see Upload, click the three dots, then choose Upload). Choose Files from the dropdown. Select the video from your computer. Wait while the video uploads, which may take several minutes. In the upper right of the pop-up window it will say "Uploading 1 file" while it uploads. Then proceed with Step b below.
    2. If you have already uploaded the video: click on the video you want to use, and then click the Select button in the lower right of the pop-up window.
  5. Scroll down in the pop-up window and edit the Page name (by default it will be the file name including the extension).
  6. Make sure "Load in a new tab" is unchecked so that students view the video right in CC.
  7. Click the "Add Item" button in the lower right of the pop-up window.
  8. The unpublished link to the video will be added at the bottom of the module. Don't forget to publish when you are ready for students to be able to view the video. To publish, click the gray circle icon to the right of the video link.

Embed Video on a Page

  1. While editing your Page, click the OneDrive icon in the rich content editor toolbar. If you do not see the OneDrive icon, select the Apps icon. If you do not see OneDrive in the dropdown, click on View All. Select Microsoft OneDrive.
  2. Allow the pop-up window to load with the contents of your OneDrive (this may take a second).
  3. The next step depends on if you have already uploaded the video to OneDrive or not.
    1. If you have not yet uploaded the video: select the Folder you want to add the video to. Click the Upload option in the upper right of the pop-up window, and choose Files from the dropdown. Select the video from your computer. Wait while the video uploads, which may take several minutes. In the upper right of the pop-up window it will say "Uploading 1 file" while it uploads. Then proceed with Step b below.
    2. If you have already uploaded the video: click on the video you want to use, and then click either Embed or Link. We recommend Embed so that students watch the video directly in Cougar Courses instead of being directed to an external site in a new tab.
  4. The video will then be embedded or linked on the Page.
  5. When finished, don't forget to Save the Page. And don't forget to publish!

Prevent Downloads

At this time, students can download videos by default. They cannot do so directly in Cougar Courses, they would need to open the video in Stream, and then click on the menu to download. So the likelihood of students downloading is small, but it is possible.

If you do not want students to be able to download, you must manually change the setting. You only have to do this once per course (not per video), but it does need to be done for every individual course container, every term. This is because once you import your course content into another course container, the default settings return.

We are hoping in the future to either be able to change the default download setting, or at least have the updated settings persist when you import the course content.

How to prevent downloads

  1. Once you have added at least one video to your course via OneDrive (either through Modules or on a Page), go to the video in Cougar Courses (but do not push Play).
  2. Click the "Watch in Stream" button in the lower right of the video screen.
  3. This will open the video in a new tab. In that tab, click Share in the upper right. Then click Manage Access from the dropdown.
  4. In the upper right of the pop-up window, click the three horizontal dots, then click Advanced Settings in the dropdown.
  5. This will open up a new tab. In that tab, click on Site Contents on the lefthand side menu.
  6. Click the folder OneDriveLTIFiles.
  7. For the folder called Shared Items, click the horizontal three dots, then choose Manage Access from the menu.
  8. In the pop-up window, click the Groups tab.
  9. The bottom two groups should be "[course name] Visitors" and "[course name] Members."
    1. Click on "[course name] Visitors", click on "Direct Access: Can view," click on the "Can view" dropdown and change the setting from "Can view" to "Can't Download." Click Apply. Click on the back arrow next to Manage Access in the top left of the pop-up window.
    2. Click on "[course name] Members", click on "Direct Access: Can view" , click on "Can view" dropdown and change the setting from "Can view" to "Can't Download." Then click Apply. Click on the back arrow next to Manage Access in the top left of the pop-up window.
  10. Click the close icon in the upper right of the pop-up window.
  11. You can then close these two tabs and return to the Cougar Courses tab. Now any OneDrive video you add as a link in Modules or embed on a Page in this course cannot be downloaded by students.
  12. Set a reminder to repeat these steps the next time you use this content. If you want the reminder to be in Cougar Courses, you could create an unpublished Page or Text Header in your first module right by the your syllabus would be best. That way you will see it when you replace your syllabus the next term.
