Monica Ambrocio

Monica Ambrocio is a first-year student studying Biotechnology. Growing up surrounded by her family's business, she grew a deep appreciation towards the business aspect of medical innovation. Monica has always been passionate about furthering her study in cell manipulation and aims to pursue a PhD. She is driven by her desire to contribute to the advances of medical interventions, particularly when it comes to gene therapy. With support of the BEARS program, she strives for excellence in her following years at CSUSM. 

Madison

Madison Ash

Madison Ash is a first-year CSUSM student majoring in Biological Sciences, Physiology concentration and minoring in African-American studies. She aspires to attend graduate school and become a non-invasive Cardiologist. Currently, she is interested in designing a lab that creates a heart version of a skin graft, that can be used in a surgical procedure to replace any damaged tissue in the heart that has occurred from the effects of cardiovascular disease. During her free time, she enjoys creating digital artwork and writing fictional stories surrounding mythology and fantasy.

Dregyn

Dregyn Bennett

Dregyn a sophomore in biotechnology. Working as a pharmacy clerk and as graduate from Mission Vista High’s Project Lead the Way biomedical pathway developed his early passion in research. He is currently a member of Dr. Julie Jameson's  immunology lab studying Alopecia Areata and tissue repair.

Michael Clark

Michael Clark II is a first-year at CSUSM studying Applied Physics. He is very interested in pursuing a Ph.D. program in Biophysics. He enjoys diving deeper into the concepts of quantum computing and integration into the medical field. In his free time, he enjoys traveling along the West Coast and spending time on the beach during sunrises and sunsets.

Jean Duran

Jean Duran is a sophomore majoring in Biological Sciences. He is passionate about pursuing an MD/PhD career, with a focus on addressing health disparities in underrepresented communities. Currently, Jean conducts research in a heart laboratory at CSUSM under the mentorship of Dr. James Kezos. Beyond academics, he actively participates in community events and volunteers at local high schools throughout San Diego County. In his free time, Jean enjoys swimming, cooking, and exploring local beaches. 

Gianna

Gianna Gutierrez

Gianna is a first-year Biochemistry student at CSUSM. Gianna is interested in research related to human physiology, particularly neuroscience. In the future, she intends to pursue a PhD in biomedical research related to cognitive sciences. In her free time, Gianna enjoys going to live music shows, going to the gym, and hiking.

Zareth Guzman

Zareth Guzman is a sophomore Biotechnology major. Currently, she is a STEM Ambassador for CRESE and a BEARS scholar where she is learning the value of STEM while helping to cultivate young minds. Upon graduation, she will attend a graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with an emphasis on device innovation and development— Her goal is to work for LivaNova’s research segment on VNS therapy for epilepsy. In Zareth’s free time she enjoys reading  poetry, driving, attending church, and watching ballets and 
orchestras. 

Tania

Tania Hernandez

Tania is a sophomore majoring in Biological Sciences with a concentration in physiology. She aspires to pursue a MD/PhD career, in hopes to become a pediatrician. Currently, Tania is working on a project where they use methods of gas and high-pressure liquid chromatography to further identify different components of the molecules in ostrich eggs in hopes for alternative pest control. Beyond academics, she volunteers at Kaiser Permanente and works as a behavior technician, helping children with autism. In her free time, Tania enjoys hikes, trying different coffee shops, and spending time at the beach.

Stephanie Hernandez Garibay

Stephanie is a first-year studying Biotechnology. Her goal is to one day work in a biomedical research lab researching regenerative medicine. She hopes to contribute to groundbreaking treatments that can treat diseases through genetic modification. Stephanie’s life-term goal is to improve healthcare for economically marginalized populations. Outside of school, Stephanie enjoys dancing in ballet folklorico, reading, listening to music, and exploring new places.

Kailey is a first-year student majoring in Biochemistry. She aspires to earn her PhD in genetics to pursue biomedical engineering research. In her free time, she enjoys getting food with her little brother and going on night drives with her best friends. She also enjoys reading sci-fi novels and walking her dog, Conan.

Faheema Vawoo Abdullah Sahib

Faheema is a sophomore majoring in Biotechnology with a minor in Quantitative Biology and Biostatistics. She aspires to pursue a PhD in Bioengineering and Genetics. She is currently working with Dr. Carlos Luna, where they study cancer biology and tumor aggressiveness. In her free time, Faheema enjoys painting and spending time at the beach.
