Application Details

The application process consists of two rounds, Round 1 is designed for us to get to know you more and determine if the program is a good match for you. Round 2 supplemental materials will only be required of selected Round 1 applicants.

Round 1

Application Materials due March 10, 2023:

  1. Resume/CV - 2 page maximum (PDF).
  2. An unofficial CSUSM transcript (PDF).
  3. Personal statement (up to 1,000 words, PDF) that addresses:
    • Describe any previous research experience/accomplishments (this can be indepdendent research or projects done in a course)
    • What are your advanced degree and/or professional goals?
    • How will the skills and opportunities gained through mentored research supported by the Beckman Scholar award benefit your future professional pursuits, and help you contribute to society as a future mentor, leader, or innovator?
  4.  Only certain faculty can be Beckman Mentor.  For Round 1 you need to contact a Beckman Mentor to discuss the Beckman program and see if they agreed to potentially be your mentor (will give name as part of application survey). For Round 1 you two will agree to potentially work together, for Round 2 (later) you will write up a proposal and mentor plan.
    • Please consider you own research interests and review the Beckman Mentor page.  You will be required to contact a Beckman mentor about this scholarship application to discuss potential research ideas/areas and receive their approval to submit their name as a potential mentor

Selection of Beckman Scholars will be wholistic and potential based. The top finalists will be notified on March 17, 2023 and invited to submit supplemental materials for Round 2.
