Section Description

Water and energy issues have dominated California's environmental concerns. We are faced with recurring droughts, flooding, energy shortages and demands for increased renewable energy. One of the most important issues that is often overlooked is the interface between water and energy (termed watergy). Energy is needed to move, process, heat and purify water and we use a tremendous amount of energy to simply move water from the source to a distant point of use. We also use energy to process and purify water, operate wastewater treatment plants and desalinate water for drinking purposes. It is imperatiave that we understand the waste-energy nexus, and improve our management, efficiency and conservation of these resources. This workshop will focus on how watergy programs can meet our energy, water and financial needs into the future. We will discuss technical and managerial changes, and how we can provide our communities with water while reducing waste, increasing efficiencies and minimizing degradation of our watersheds.
