The Beat: See It! Hear It! Feel It!
The University Student Union (USU) is the “heartbeat” of the CSUSM campus. The theme for our Grand Opening Festivities is "The Beat: See It! Hear It! Feel It! The new spaces have brought new energy and life to Student Life and the USU has seen more students than ever enjoying time spent on campus between classes. The USU also brings new exciting venues for students, faculty, staff and community members to organize gatherings and conferences.
The two week Grand Opening Festivities will have a variety of events for students, alumni, faculty/staff and community members. All events are free unless otherwise noted. We want the energy to be so infectious that you can see, hear and feel the beat.
Commuter Appreciation Day
April 14th 8:00 - 10:00am & 4:30 - 6:30pm USU Commuter Lounge Who's Invited: CSUSM Commuters
Join us as we celebrate our campus commuters in our Commuter Lounge. We will have refreshments and other treats available for you to drop by and experience this new space. The USU Commuter Lounge offers new and different amenities for commuters.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
April 15th 12:00 - 1:30pm USU Amphitheater Who's Invited: Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Community
We will cut the ribbon to celebrate the formal opening of the University Student Union. President Haynes, Alumni Association Representative and student leaders will speak and reflect on the now realized dream of a student union and what it means for the growth of CSUSM.
April 16th 5:30 - 7:30pm USU Lawn Who's Invited: Students
Celebrating art and creative expression, join in the fun and be part of this new Art fUSUion program series. This USU Grand Opening activity will feature local artist Amy Burkman, who will lead an interactive art class and create your own personal canvas painting. Class is limited to 40 participants. Pasta dinner will be provided. Additionally, this event will feature a speed painting demonstration by Amy that you definitely MUST SEE!
There is a limited about of space and all spots have now been claimed. You may still attend the speed painting demonstration to receive your stamp for this event at about 7:00 right before the movie night.
Outdoor Movie Night - "Frozen"
April 16th 7:30 - 9:30pm USU Amphitheater Who's Invited: Students, Faculty, Staff and their families
Experience movie night under the stars. The Disney movie "Frozen" will be presented on a giant screen as you and your friends and family lounge in the outdoor amphitheater. The event will also include pizza and shaved ice. Bring your favorite blanket.
April 17th 7:00 - 9:00pm USU East Pavilion Who's Invited: Students, Faculty and Staff
This event is the first of an ongoing program series. We will have acoustic performances by CSUSM Students who will perform a selection of songs. Enjoy this laid back atmosphere while enjoying some coffee specialties from Jazzman's Cafe & Bakery.
Arts & Lectures: Dr. Terrence Roberts
April 22nd 6:00 - 9:00pm USU Ballroom Who's Invited: Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Community
As an institution dedicated to providing rich learning experiences for its students, Cal State San Marcos is proud to welcome Dr. Terrence Roberts—a member of the ‘Little Rock Nine’—to our campus. Dr. Roberts will share his insights and perspectives on social justice practice and policy and provide some tools students will need as members of an increasily diverse global community.
Tukwut Leadership Awards Night
April 23rd 5:30 - 7:30pm USU Ballroom Who's Invited: Students, Faculty and Staff
Student leaders are the cornerstone of involvement and activity on the CSUSM campus. TLAN is an evening that recognizes individuals and groups for their outstanding leadership and involvement that make student life thrive at CSUSM. Event begins at 5:30pm and the formal program will run from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
How Green is it?
April 24th 12:00 - 1:00pm USU Rooftop Patio Who's Invited: Students, Faculty and Staff
This event will celebrate efforts to achieve LEED Gold Certification and recognize unique "green" features of the USU. Please join us for a small program featuring community representatives from SDG&E, who will award CSUSM a rebate check for our sustainable features included in the USU. CSUSM Campus Dining will provide information on their sustainable food service products and share information on Sodexo's global initiatives.
April 24th 7:30 - 11:30pm USU Amphitheater/Ballroom Who's Invited: Students
As the key student event of the USU Grand Opening Celebration, this is a must attend event for all CSUSM Cougars. Be part of this entertaining and fun event which begins in the Amphitheater at 7:30pm with food trucks, live DJ entertainment and other activities and transitions to the Ballroom for dancing, music and light show. We expect this first time student spectacular event will become an annual event students WON'T WANT TO MISS, created for and by students!
April 25th 1:00 - 3:30pm USU Ballroom Who's Invited: USU/AS Colleagues
Colleagues from all over California have been invited to come visit not one but TWO brand new Student Union facilities in San Diego County. They will tour the new Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Center at San Diego State University and the University Student Union at CSU San Marcos. This event is a partnership between CSUSM and SDSU and will give colleagues the opportunity to visit the schools and see their innovative new spaces.
Alumni Casino Night
April 25th 7:00 - 10:00pm USU Ballroom Who's Invited: Alumni
All CSUSM Alumni are invited to attend this special alumni-only event featuring casino style gaming tables with play money, refreshments, socializing and much more. The event will showcase the USU to CSUSM Alumni, who have fostered a legacy in achieving this campus milestone.
April 17th-25th USU Who's Invited: Students, Faculty and Staff
Sodexo, the CSUSM food service provider, will surprise us with random samplings from our food concepts and vendors. Stop by often during peak times to see what's cooking.
