The Alliance is built upon the belief that student success is a result of strong collaboration among children and youth, families, schools, universities, and the larger community. Incorporating the great ethnic, language, and economic diversity of our region, the Family Empowerment Network recognizes that family environments that support academic commitment and achievement lead to greater student success.
With its partner school districts, The Alliance to Accelerate Excellence in Education offers an 8-week program called FACE (Family Alliance Community Exchange), which is focused on the Habits of Mind. The Habits of Mind are essential skills that characterize successful individuals such as curiosity, creativity, responsibility, and persistence. When families and educators create environments that foster these habits and when youth understand how successful people react to challenging situations, they learn how to be successful in academics, career, and life. Weekly workshop sessions are offered simultaneously for elementary, middle, and high school students as well as sessions for adults in English and Spanish. Faculty Director of the Alliance, Erika Daniels, says that the FACE program meets a critical need for families because it helps all members of any type of family develop the cognitive, social, and emotional skills necessary for living a full and productive life.
Each two hour sessions begins with a family meal, catered by a local restaurant, with conversation centered around the topic for that week - then participants go to their assigned classroom for an enriched learning experience with the facilitator.
FACE is available to all 10 Alliance partner school districts and is free to all district families who participate in the 8-week program. Annual participation varies so please contact The Alliance staff for details.
