Students can seek out opportunities for growth and success that allow them to gain practical, hands-on skills, while engaging in deep learning experiences that will benefit them at CSUSM and life beyond. Internship courses are available for all students who are interested in actively participate in professional development opportunities that they can apply towards their future career goals, while earning academic credit at the same time. Students can even get paid for their credit internship! The CSUSM Office of Internships has an extensive database where students can search for opportunities with local organizations to find the best fit for their future career goals.
Look for Internship courses in your major road map. Students in majors that do not have active Internship courses listed have the option to enroll in University 495 to earn credit.

The more competitive the internship (internships with selective criteria, application/interview process, all-expenses paid, high GPA), the further out students should plan (a year out). If you’re looking to go out of the area or out of state a year out.
3-4 semesters before you want to begin your internship
- Research possible internship opportunities
- Visit the Office of Internships website.
- Consult with professors & advisors
- Identify where you would like to do your internship
- Search the CSUSM Internship database posted on the Internships website to obtain general information about organizations, internship programs, contact people, and deadlines
- Attend the Spring Internship Fair
1-2 semesters before you intern
- Apply for internships
- Write your resume and cover letter. Get feedback from the Career Center.
- Practice your interview skills. Schedule a mock interview with the Career Center.
- Apply online or by whatever method the organization requires.
2-3 months before you intern
- Interview and accept an internship
