Written Communication Placement

Categories for English/Written Communication

  • W1 - Fulfilled requirement: Student has fulfilled GE Area 1A requirement.
  • W2 - Enroll in GE English/written communication courses: Student has met standards, ready to enroll in General Education Writing (GEW) 101B.
  • W3 - Enroll in supported GE English/written communication courses (participation in Early Start is recommended)
      • Placement in GEW 101A, followed by GEW 101B. In Fall 2026, there is a pilot program that offers some students in this category the opportunity to complete their GE requirement in a single semester via GEW 102C.
  • W4 - Enroll in supported GE English/written communication courses (participation in Early Start is strongly recommended)
      • Placement in GEW 101A, followed by GEW 101B
        or
      • Fall placement in GEW 101B for students who have passed GEW 101A through Early Start at CSUSM with a grade of C- minus or better.

All students are highly encouraged to complete their GE Area 1A graduation requirement in their first year at CSUSM.

Please note that your placement category may change if you change your major and/or when your final high school and college transcripts have been received and reviewed.
