Placement in Written Communication and Mathematics
Placement is determined by multiple measures in written communication and math/quantitative reasoning. Use the CSU website to estimate your general education placement.
Academic Preparation and Placement
The CSU requires that all entering freshman students be evaluated in their preparation to complete first-year courses in written communication and math/quantitative reasoning. The evaluation will utilize a broad set of measures, including standardized test scores such as the EAP, ACT, SAT or AP exams, as well as high school coursework and grades. This evaluation of academic readiness is not a condition for admission to the CSU, but it is an important step for determining the best course placement for entering students.
There are four categories for placement:
- Fulfilled requirement
- Enroll in general education (GE) English/written communication and math/quantitative reasoning courses
- Enroll in supported GE English/written communication and math/quantitative reasoning courses (participation in Cougar Scholars: Early Start is recommended)
- Enroll in supported GE English/written communication and math/quantitative reasoning courses (participation in Cougar Scholars: Early Start is strongly recommended)
