Associate Professor of Theatre, Program Director
Judy Bauerlein is the Program Director of Theatre at California State University San Marcos where she teaches courses in theatre literature, theory and practice. She is deeply invested in community-based theatre practice and believes that it is one of the best ways to build community, represent diversity and deconstruct social systems that divide communities. Judy has worked extensively as a performer. Her community engaged theatre practice is inspired by her studies with Augusto Boal, Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre and the Bread and Puppet Theatre. Most recently she appeared in Naomi Iizuka’s What Happens Next, a collaboration between Cornerstone Theatre and the La Jolla Playhouse. She originated the role of Anna Petronova in Jay Scheib’s adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Platonov at the La Jolla Playhouse. She is a member of SAG and AFTRA.
Assistant Professor of Theatre
Hailing from the redwooded Santa Cruz Mountains HANS VERMY earned his PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from Brown University in 2014. His manuscript, Alive and Life-Like: Animation, Theatre, and Other Performance Histories of the Digital is on cartoons and theater and proposes that we investigate the animate interface of the computer to understand digital performance. He has been fortunate to labor across two fields with his work falling between celluloid and stage and the cut and the page; a film editor, a theater writer and maker and performer and fan.
