Helpful Elections Information

All Senator terms are Fall ’24 through Spring ’26 unless otherwise noted; committee terms, as noted. One-year terms are due to either the Committee charge or because of vacancy, i.e. a seat was vacant for the first year of a two-year term. Number in parentheses indicates number of available seats, if more than one.

Academic Senate (Senators) - Senate is scheduled to meet eleven times during the 24/25 academic year – usually the first Wednesday of each month (and additional meetings in November, March and April), from 12:30 PM to 2:20 PM.

Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) Senator - Open to Tenured, Tenure-track Faculty and Lectures who are Full-time or have 3-year appointments. ASCSU is made up of faculty members from each of the CSU’s 23 campuses and represents the CSU faculty in matters of system-wide concern.  CSUSM has two ASCSU representatives, serving three-year, staggered terms.  Traditionally, the ASCSU holds five plenary meetings each year in Long Beach. (Click here for this year’s calendar) to see an example of a typical AY meeting schedule – statewide senators attend those meetings labeled “Plenary” during their first year of service).  The ASCSU’s committees also meet periodically.  At times, these meetings are conducted electronically or via telephone.  (Please note:  an ASCSU Senator does not typically serve on a committee during the first year of their three-year term.) Anticipated release time for ASCSU Senators is 6 WTU per academic year.

Additionally, the ASCSU representatives serve as official members of the CSUSM Senate Executive Committee (EC), and as CSUSM Senators (AS).  EC meetings are held most Wednesdays during the Academic year, from 11:30 am to 1:20 pm, and 11:30 am to 12:20 pm on Senate meeting days; AS will meet approximately eleven times during 24-25.  (It is understood that the ASCSU reps miss EC and AS meetings when times conflict with statewide ASCSU business.)

Anti-Racism, Anti-Colonialism, and Social Justice Committee (ARACSJC) - All nominees for the ARACSJ Committee must submit a candidate statement that notes demonstrated experience in anti-racism, anti-colonialism, and/or social justice work through their teaching, research, community engagement, or service activities, as per Article 6.6 of the Senate Constitution in order to appear on the ballot. (The statement may be left off of the ballot itself at the candidate's request.)

Diversity and Equity Curriculum Committee (DECC) - In order to appear on the ballot, nominees must have demonstrated expertise in diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice work through their teaching, research, community engagement, or service activities. (The statement may be left off of the ballot itself at the candidate's request.)

Faculty Grants Committee (FGC) - Candidates must be tenured.

Lecturer Committee (LC) – Elections are not held for Lecturer Committee members, instead, LC members are first elected as the lecturer representative to another Senate Standing Committee. Then, once elections are completed, the LC Chair will convene the Lecturer Committee that consists of the lecturer representatives from the other Standing Committees*. Compensation is dependent on many factors including fund availability, entitlement and other contract issues. Once elected, Lecturers should consult with appropriate administrators to determine how their compensation should be received (i.e., Assigned Time, PD funds). Regarding lecturer seats on Standing Committees and the Lecturer Committee please see 6.11 of Senate Constitution for more details. *Standing Committees are denoted by an asterisk (*) in the table below.

Promotion and Tenure Committee (PTC) - PTC seats must be contested to appear on ballots (at least two candidates.) Candidates must be tenured and have the rank of Full Professor/Librarian.

Professional Leave Committee (PLC) - Candidates must be tenured.
