Research Studies On Arts Education

  • Arts Education Partnership This site hosts a number of arts education studies, including Critical Links: Learning in the Arts (available online). This compendium is a collection of over 60 studies conducted on arts education. Areas of research include arts education partnerships, the impact of the arts on student achievement and arts assessment. Publications are available as free downloads.
  • National Assembly of State Art Agencies This site hosts the follow-up study, to Critical Links is Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement. Their research includes arts education partnerships, an introduction to scientifically based research and the impact of the arts on learning.
  • Arts for Learning Web Library A site that catalogs good practices in arts education. Hosted by a number of arts organizations, including Young Audiences.
  • Americans for the Arts National Arts Policy Database Catalogs research on all areas of the arts, including arts education.
  • CAPE: Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education Provides pdfs of a number of evaluation studies that CAPE has conducted about their programs, including arts integration, teaching artists, and action research.
  • The Dana Foundation Online catalog of their downloadable reports focusing on arts education partnerships and the impact of the arts on learning.
  • The Ford Foundation A downloadable version of their 2005 report, Deep in the Art of Texas.
  • John S. and James L. Knight Foundation A downloadable version of the Magic of Music Symphony Orchestra Initiative.

  • Community Arts Network Provides links to a wide variety of arts-related studies, including many on arts education.

  • California Arts Council The CAC published Arts in Education Research Compendium in 2001 and it is in a free downloadable version.
  • National Foundation for Educational Research This British website hosts a variety of papers and reports on educational research including Developing Young Children Creativity Through the Arts: What Does the Research Have to Offer?
  • The Harvard Family Research Project's Out-of-School Time Program Research and Evaluation Database This database provides overviews of research and evaluations of after-school/out-of-school activities. A variety of activities, including the arts, are studied here. The database was last updated in December 2006.
