Frequently Asked Questions

The following Frequently Asked Questions are based on various topics related to the Social Justice Scholars program  If you are confused about any topic and your questions are not addressed here, feel free to email us.

  • What is the Social Justice Scholars program?

    The Social Justice Scholars program is an initiative created by the Student Life Centers for Identity, Inclusion, and Empowerment working with 15-20 undergraduate students in a series of workshops that focus on developing their social justice identity and dialogue surrounding social justice issues.

  • Who can be part of the program?

     Undergraduate (incoming and transfer) students from all majors are welcomed to apply. 

  • What days will we meet?

    All sessions are on Fridays from 12-2pm. Scholars will be held biweekly starting September 30, in-person at the Cross-Cultural Center Accomodations can be made for those who wish to remain virtual and the format is subject to change based upon the on-going COVID-19 pandemic

    • Week 1: What is Social Justice? 

    • Week 2: Trauma-Informed Care with Avery Bather

    • Week 3: Food Justice with Juliana Goodlaw-Morris

    • Week 4: Transphobia and Trans* Allyship with Dr. Mikee Inton-Campbell

    • Week 5: Making Space Before Taking Space: Moving Beyond Land Acknowledgments at CSUSM with Dr. Joely Proudfit and Dr. Gina Gilio Whitaker

    • Week 6: Prison Industrial Complex with Project Rebound

  • What if I can't make it to every session?
    You and the coordinator will meet individually to catch you up on the activitiy/topic we discussed. 
  • What are the benefits of being part of the Social Justice Scholars program

     The benefits of being part of this cohort includes 

    • Develop community with other CSUSM students and professional staff 
    • Develop skills to become socially conscious leaders and community members
    • Recognize their personal connection with systems of power and privilege
    • Option to further Social Justice experience at CSUSM by becoming Social Justice Summit Facilitator, Volunteering for the Social Justice Symposium 
    • Certificate of completion of program at the end of the semester
