Specialized Block Pre-enrollment for First-year Students
Updated: February 22, 2025
Before pre-enrolling first-year students in specific majors and courses, consult with Sally Serrin Melena (sserrin@csusm.edu) to discuss the following:
Class Details
- Class Information: Provide the subject, catalog number, section number, and class number for each class.
- Enrollment Limits: Specify the number of students to pre-enroll per class. Consider over-enrollment, as attendance is typically lower than enrollment.
- Linked Enrollment: Indicate if certain courses should be pre-enrolled together.
Applicable Students
- Eligibility: Only first-year students in their 1st or 2nd semester qualify.
- Major/Plan Codes: Provide plan codes for eligible students (e.g., Biochemistry students in CHEMBIOBBS and CHEMBIOB2M).
- Student Categories: Identify categories for pre-enrollment. If students need additional support (e.g., Categories 3 & 4), specify their Area 2 and 1A class sections.
Communications
- Responsible Parties: Identify the office(s) or individual(s) responsible for notifying students.
- Student Notification: Clear communication with students is essential to prevent them from dropping pre-enrolled courses.
Deadlines
- Submit all required information at least two weeks before first-year enrollment begins, per the Schedule Build Timeline.
- Late requests (after enrollment begins) require a student schedule review and further discussion.
Notes
- Students with holds, certain program restrictions, or scheduling conflicts will not be pre-enrolled.
- Starting Fall 2025, requirements B4 & A2 are referred to as Areas 2 & 1A.
